For my LINK project I volunteered at a Badge Day for Girl Scouts. This took place at a local grade school. It was in two sessions. 9-12 and then 1-3. I had the privilege of working with brownies. They are 2nd and 3rd grade, and let me tell you they are a handful at times. What I did, we I knew about this program that was being put on for a couple of weeks. I picked two badges from the Brownie book, and prepared them for the girls to earn. To the brownies they are known as Try-Its. I picked Movers and Sounds of Music. For each try-it we had to attempt to do five of the points on it. For Movers we made air planes, gliders, kites, weather vane streamers, and pinwheel. Each girl made their own to take home. We talked about how wind makes things move. We also stood in the hallway and saw how far our airplanes flew, and went outside and held up our weather vane streamers to see which direction the wind was blowing. In this program I had eight girls. Then in the afternoon I had twelve girls in the sounds of music. We made hand drums, egg maracas, tambourine, and taught them to blow over a bottle of water to see what sound it makes. Then we played the instruments to Justin Bieber song “Baby”. J. They loved it. After all this they used their voices and I taught them some different Girl Scout songs. It was a wonderful day.
This related to the class because I was working with all different types of girls. Some of these girls came from families who lived in poverty. Most of them had assistance to be able to come. We also build their self esteem. Most of these girls come from every type of back ground single mother or single father, both parents working. Some of them even had learning disabilities. While there I worked with different adults. I was able to see how they worked with the girls and dealt with the situations that rose.
Girl Scouts helps with so many things in the community. That is one of their major goals is giving back to the community. I have seen them plant trees, clean up the park, take a Saturday and collect food for the food pantry. It helps girls gain strength and courage in themselves.
I enjoyed doing this assignment. I love being able to be involved and helping these girls become great young women. They had some good role models. We always talk about famous people that are girl scouts. There is Chelsea Clinton and Dakota Fanning. There is many more. I learned with this you have to take time for these girls. They want your attention. When I had all twelve girls they all wanted my attention at once. But, we got through it and it was great. I overall had a wonderful day. Girl Scouts building Courage, Character, and Confidence.
I hope you enjoy. The video below is pictures from that. The song is a Girl Scout song. It is based upon our promise.
