WEIU Kids Event at A Festival of Arts by Ashley Fultz

I volunteered at the “EIU Celebration: A Festival of the Arts” event with the WEIU Educational Services.  Clifford the Big Red Dog and Martha from the books, Martha Speaks were at the event.  There was a story time for the children and they were able to take part in some crafts.  The children that came to story time also went home with a backpack full of coloring pages, a Martha Speaks DVD, and more.  Also, all of the children who came to the Celebration and stopped by the WEIU Educational Services tent were able to pick out a book to take home.  My role in the event was helping the children work with the crafts after story time and getting children to head over to the tent to take home a free book.
This event helps disadvantaged children by giving them educational material.  Most children who are living in poverty face cognitive and educational disadvantages.  By receiving free books, DVDs and pencils, these children are able to work on reading and have some materials to use to do their homework and work on reading.
WEIU Educational Services has a great impact on education in the community.  The station is a Public Broadcasting Station.  One of PBS’s goals is promoting education.  Throughout the year children are able to participate in different reading activities and receive free books.  I am doing my internship with this organization and I am working on a “Passport to Health” program which will promote healthy living and education for kindergartners in Charleston schools while also promoting local businesses and organizations.
I thought this event was great to promote reading in the community.  Through the PBS Kids Characters, the kids became excited about reading books.  Getting children excited to read is the key to improving literacy rates and to improve education.  It is also something I am passionate about, which made the volunteer experience even more enjoyable.
